DJ J-Red is Australia’s only World DJ Champion, earning his prestigious title by taking out the World 2005 ITF Experimental Category in Prague in 2005.

Known as the the DJ who introduced Video Turntablism to the battle scene, the road to the coveted world championship was a long and well fought one, forged through countless sets, battles, performances and routines around the globe.

No stranger to the World DJ Competition Battle scene, J-red is also actually a very diverse DJ playing all styles of music, having learnt the ropes with Mobile DJing at age 11, at age 15 moving into R&B and Hip hop nightclubs under the guidance of Melbourne R&B pioneer DJ John Casa (Central Station/Wicked records).

J-Red then entered his first DJ Battle at age 19 the ‘Brown Sugar DJ competition’ @Silvers nightclub in Melbourne walking out with $1000 cash for his excellent blend of Club music and scratch abilities. He then became a Radio DJ on KISS FM with fellow DMC/ITF DJ champion DJ Kuya mixing live on 4 turntables at age 20 on the Turnstyles show.
J-Red started running nights in the late 90s and early 2000s like ‘Fresh!’, ‘All good!’ and ‘Madizms’ known for pulling 800 people to 2 levels of Hip hop and Funk at The Laundry on a Monday night with absolutely no promo, just a really good mix of music and turntable dexterity which led to residencies at ‘The Lounge’, ‘First Floor’ and the very popular ‘Honky Tonks’.
J-Red then went on to throwing his signature cuts on a number of Vinyl and CD releases for record labels Nuffsaid, Unkut recordings, Obese recordings and Crookneck records, all of which are all known to go for top dollar now in the collectors market to this day, chuffed to say ‘not once have i ended up in a JB bargain bin!’
In 2006 J-Red wanted to take his World ITF Experimental DJ title further, he jumped at the chance to help ‘Heavyweight TV’ for Channel 31 which led to him becoming a TV producer for his next project ‘J-Red’s Video Throwdown’ also shown on Channel 31 around Australia where he mixed music video clips on ‘Pioneer DVJ-X1’ DVD Turntables with all the best mixing juggling and scratch precision he’s known for on a set of Technics Turntables. Pioneer Electronics took notice and J-Red was then made a Pioneer DJ Ambassador, giving feedback to engineers in Japan while showcasing with some of the biggest names in the industry all around Australia and parts of Asia.

Having played to at venues and nightclubs in London, Prague, Vienna, Los Angeles, Japan, Singapore the list goes on as you can picture. Gone are the days of lugging 3 crates of records around 5 nights a week all over the country as the DJ’s adopted Serato, J-Red is still known to pull out an all Vinyl set every now and then for a bit of fun.
Whatever format, whatever mixer whatever crowd, whether at Brixton Academy in London in front of 4000 people, or at The Met in Brisbane for a couple of Thousand, J-Red will always take you on an epic journey filled with a great selection, great mixing and his signature precision and charm that only he is capable of in the mix.

DJ J-Red and DJ Diverse “1.2. Drop A Verse”

J-Red: I knew of Prowla but it wasn’t until I met him that I realised that he only lived a couple of streets away from me! Before I knew it I was riding my BMX to his joint and we’d just scratch. There was word of the Rock Da City comp goin’ on and I was just keen to get on a track. The only recording I’d done in the way of scratch tracks was using Cool Edit in ’95 on a shitty PC – You can’t even multi-track on that! So the opportunity to record a track was a blessing.

I didn’t get to meet Diverse, he recorded his cuts in NSW and I just put them together here. I just took down a bunch of records that I thought would work together, wrote out a little script of what to do, and then bang! I was very hell-bent on, ‘I’ve gotta do every cut separate and it has to be a one-take sorta deal.’ I want what goes on the track to be the initial feeling. For me to punch shit in and do it one after the other was a dream. I was mainly a battle dude back then too, I wasn’t really concentrating on recording, but that’s what fired me up to do more.

After touring the world numerous times, playing DJ sets and battling DJs in cities like London, Los angeles, Japan, and Singapore. Add to that playing alongside such influential artists such as Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, Black keys, Gangstarr, Afrika Bambatta, Black eyed peas, Method man, Redman, Public enemy, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rahzel, Kool keith, Masta Ace – already you get a sense of how seriously he takes his DJing to new heights. This is just the tip of the iceberg!!

DJ J-RED was introduced to the decks at an extremely early age, busting stylus’s and turnatables at the age of 4!!. He started djing parties at the age of 11, playing Funk, Reggae, Rock, Hip-Hop and everything in between.

He started Djing at underage events at the age of 13, and moved into overage clubs at the age of 16. He had learnt alot of his mentors about mixing programming and keeping the vibe with different groups of people within the room. At the age of 17 he entered his first DMC battle placing 3rd, little did he know he would be the only Dj with 8 National titles buy the time he had released his first (legal) mix cd – Streets Ahead on Crookneck/Stomp. He also pioneered a Hip-hop Turntablist mix show on KISS 90 FM along with Dj Kuya, Australias first show of its kind. He has appeared on numerous TV shows displaying his skills and spreading knowlege of the artform to all audiences.

He has received awards from numerous websites, most recently voted Australias best Urban mix Dj, Turntablist and mix-tape Dj on www.ozhiphop.com – Australias largest online Hip-Hop community! He has received amazing reviews from all over the world in regards to his releases and performances. And last but certainly not least he’s the Dj for Melbournes premier Hip-hop crew – Lyrical Commission – www.unkutrecordings.com . The rep grows bigger…
