Tom Jones, the man better known as DJ Wasabi, was born in Matong, New South Wales in 1985.
At 18, Wasabi stated Fortknight Productions, the label under which he has produced five albums. Wasabi officially joined the Melbourne based hip hop group Combat Wonmbat in 2002.
In 2004 he was invited to remix “Waltzing Matilda” for comic outfit Scared Weird Little Guys and subsequently performed with the trio at the Melbourne Comedy Festival National Telethon. Wasabi was awarded the ARIA award in 2004 for his turntable work on the Scared Weird Little Guys’ album, Bits and Pieces.
Wasabi performs with and writes music for several bands including Bad Boys Batucada and Fortknight. He also performs in groups around Melbourne.

Erupting from the depths of Australia’s hip hop and drum and bass scene comes a dynamic new sound of Melbourne’s own Wasabi. The long awaited first solo release, ‘Calm Before The Storm,’ is a five-track EP that seamlessly traverses a sonic landscape through psychedelic valleys and over ambient contours of earthy street beats.
In 2012 Wasabi, internationally renowned proponent of turntablizm detours explore an eclectic audio science that takes the listener on a journey through the diversity of glitch, dub, industrial breaks and minimal tech with intricate fusion of wickedly crooked beats, liquid bass lines and smooth atmospheric frequencies, producing a soundscape that satisfies the hunger of every beat-fiend. With a live show incorporating a horn section, percussion as well as an array of talented vocalists, mc’s and dancers, Wasabi offers a fresh translation of passion and emotion into sonic harmony.

Wasabi first started performing on the live stage professionally at the fresh age of age 13. Becoming deeply immersed in the science of sound he started writing breaks and house, which progressed to a deeper drum and bass, break core and industrial style. A few years later, taken by turntable trickery, a break was needed from round-the-clock mouse clicking as to mastermind his new vinyl addiction. At just 16 he moved from Newcastle to Melbourne to play with internationally renowned Brazilian percussion band, “Bad Boys Batucada.”
Since redirecting his focus back to production, he has developed an intelligent bass heavy, beat driven style, moving forward into dub-step, glitch, whomp-hop, neuro dub and even minimal tech. His most recent solo project, ‘Calm Before The Storm,’ is a five-track EP that seamlessly traverses a sonic landscape through psychedelic valleys of earthy street beats. Unravelling secret tweaks and tricks to produce atmospheric sounds capes, with breath and clarity over dynamic wonky beats and liquid bass lines, is setting this album on a completely new path of psychedelic audio vistas compared to his previous work.
