  • A new wave of Australian hip-hop acts are rebelling against conventions, cutting music that is individualistic, innovative and hybridised. Part of this wave, Samuel Dobson is a Sydney based rapper, composer and producer, whose regular work across musical genres has forged him a reputation as an uniquely vivid hip-hop story teller, delving into the darkest corners of the imagination.

His journey has traced from his home in the Blue Mountains, through a four year stint at Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying Double Bass and Composition, a musical apprenticeship though Mali in West Africa and culminating in the eclectic lifestyle of a full time jazz musician, composer and hip hop artist.

As well as performing under his birth name, Samuel can be found front and centre of the Hi-Tops Brass Band, which recently wowed audiences at WOMADelaide 2015 or else rapping whilst playing bass, with Triceratops, a cult alt-soul/R&B outfit. A modest but loyal following has been developed over the last few years through solid gigging and creative projects such as Wires from the self-titled, solo mixtape. Well received on the Triple J Unearthed portal, it lay the foundation for things to come and 2015 has seen many successes. A finalist in the Triple J Unearthed Hermitude Remix Competition with track I’m Sorry… , selection as one of Unearthed’s quite achievers of 2015 and successful application for an Australia Council regional touring grant to name a few.

Innately restless, Samuel has been working on his most ambitious project yet, simply titled Samuel. Tracing the story of one young mans ill thought out decisions through separate “scenes”, this dark hip-hop/classical/jazz crossover, sometimes lovingly referred to as a “hip-hopera” asks what would you be willing to risk and what is the true cost of betrayal.

Samuel is an authentic labour of love with no label support. Rather, it has come to fruition through hard work and the kindness of an extensive network of fellow musicians and supporters in the form of a successful Pozible campaign. Singles Coda, Who You Run With and Customers are available now on Soundcloud, all regular streaming services and iTunes. Samuel is slated for early 2016 release with east coast tour in support.
