deep/ minimal and razor sharp, Suburban Dark are conceptually prolific beat makers.
Music not to be messed with, Suburban Dark (SD) is a duo hell-bent on keeping things straight and tough. Self-described as “fight beats”, their analog-synthesizer infused sound is deep, minimal and razor sharp, intended to be played loud.
Since the late 00’s, Sydney boys Chris Irvine and Ryan Wilmott have made infectious brutal sound. Their tracks range from spine-chilling noise to bass-assaulting bangers and feature collaborations with various MCs, including Jeswon, Mantra, Grey Ghost, Rapaport, and P. Smurf, creating a sound far from regular Australian hip hop.
Their debut full length album Second Front was released with Big Village Records in July 2013 to critical acclaim. The album received a slew of great reviews, was featured as album of the week on FBi Radio and has had over 200,000 plays on Spotify.
The first single, Skeletonne ft. Jeswon (Thundamentals), was added to high rotation on Triple J and featured on Triple J’s free music download page for six weeks. Since its 2013 release, Skeletonne has had over 115,000 plays on Spotify and it’s video clip has had over 76,000 hits on YouTube.
Mind Reader, the second single from Second Front, launched with a successful national tour of Suburban Dark and Jeswon in 2014 and received medium rotation on Triple J. SD’s third single release What Ya Know About ft. Rapaport enjoyed high rotation on Sydney’s leading indie Radio Station ‘FBI’.
SD’s resident Video Director/ collaborator, Ali Infinite, who directed the video for the grime anthem What Ya Know About, collaborated for a full visual show at Big Visions, a Big Village event for Vivid Festival in June 2014.
One year after Second Front the duo released an official remix of Make Those Moves (2014) by I Am Legion (Noisia X Foreign Beggars, UK), which has had over 140,000 plays on Soundcloud and was SD’s first taste of exposure on an international scale.
It’s been three years between official releases and the guys have spent the time refining their sound to deliver what will be the one of the defining albums of Suburban Dark’s career; Death From Below due to be released in late October 2017.
Remember Your Code was SD’s first featured track from Death From Below and has been received overwhelming well with multiple plays on Triple J and a successful single launch at Brighton Up Bar on September 1st 2017. The show was also a milestone for the boys as it was the first time SD played with LIVE instruments marking the first of many gigs in the new live format.
